Hi there, everyone! Hope you had a good Memorial Day weekend if you’re in the U.S.–if not, I hope you had the kind of lovely weather we had here in Maryland. Today I am sharing the third in a series of five painting projects that I’m working with DecoArt on. Over the past two months, I posted the following two projects that you should check out when you’re done here:

DecoArt Satin Enamels and Metallics Paint Lines

Nesting Tables // Trunk

In my previous two DecoArt posts, I experimented with two of their brand new paint lines: Americana Decor Satin Enamels and Americana Decor Metallics. When I’m browsing online for potential paint colors, I always look for real pieces that have been painted with a color I’m interested in. I want to see how it looks in different lights and on different materials. A computer-generated paint swatch just isn’t enough for me. That’s why I’m excited to be testing out another color: Americana Decor Satin Enamels in Classic Black!

Today’s project is also a little different because it is an upcycle tutorial as well. I turned an old bulletin board from a Good Will pile into this lovely map art for my husband’s office. I’ve wanted to do something artsy with a map for a while, and this seemed like a great project for the Classic Black paint.

Here’s what I used for this project:

And here’s how I did it.

Step 1: I used pliers to remove the staples from the back of the bulletin board so that I could separate it from the frame.

Then I gave the frame two coats of Satin Enamels in Classic Black. After the second coat was dry, I did some minor touching up on spots where the distressed white part of the frame was still showing.

Note: The Satin Enamels instructions say to lightly sand between coats when painting on raw wood and to lightly sand already painted or sealed surfaces before applying. I sanded lightly before the first coat and before the second coat.

Step 2: To size the map, I laid it over the bulletin board piece and marked where to place it. Then I gave the bulletin board piece a very generous coating of spray adhesive (outdoors!) and gently smoothed the map out onto it.

Step 3: Once all of the bubbles and wrinkles were smoothed out and the glue was completely dry, I flipped the piece over and used a rotary cutter to cut off the excess map paper from the sides. You can use scissors for this, but a rotary cutter made it so much easier to get a clean cut.

Step 4: Pop the map piece back into the frame and use a staple gun to staple it in place from the back. I used 1–2 staples on each side. I didn’t want to go overboard, but I wanted it to stay in place.

And that’s it! What a makeover:
